Incorporating D-dimer testing into diagnostic algorithms for pulmonary embolisms (PE) and/or deep vein thrombosis (DVT) can be helpful in streamlining patient care.
As common and lethal as PE is, it is imperative to diagnose and treat the patient as quickly as possible to achieve the best possible outcome. D-dimer, one of the fibrin degradation products, is a fast laboratory test that can exclude PE as a diagnosis when used in conjunction with the Wells Pretest Probability assessment and scoring.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Aguanno received a PhD in biochemistry from Memphis State University. Following his PhD, he completed two postdoctoral fellowships: one at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and a second at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Aguanno was Director of the Core Laboratory at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, for 24 years. In January 2004, he joined Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics and is currently Senior Clinical Specialist in the Disease State Management group.
